August 2, 2010 San Jose, Winchester House garden. Home to Sarah Winchester who was married to William Wirt Winchester. He was President of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1880-1881. (When he died.) Sarah was instructed to move west (by a medium) and appease the spirtits by building a great house for them. She left Connecticut and bought an unfinished eight room farm house just 3 miles west of San Jose. By 1897 Sarah owned just under fifty percent of the company's capital stock. This provided her with an income of $1000 a day. This gave her plenty of money to build her mansion.
